DEATH-THE FINAL FRONTIER

By Deborah Ann Richman

KIDDING!  APRIL FOOL'S DAY! I just wanted to get your attention. It's never the final frontier because we are all just a form of energy that will one day down the road simply convert into another form of energy and carry in some other way of being.

What does that bring up for you? Excitement, wonder, fear, sorrow? If you are like me, probably all of the above and more.

On the one hand, I think death is the greatest adventure but on the other hand, I think death sucks because people I love have started their great adventure before and without me. At least that's how it feels.

However death feels to you or me, I think it's something we need to talk about more in our western culture. It's something we need to make sacred and painfully beautiful again.

Death and dying are often institutionalized and compartmentalized to the point that we don't know how to move through it when it comes and one way or another, it is going to come.

These days there are many more ancient, natural, and holistic ways of approaching death and dying reappearing in the world. And it's not for everyone. For some, the way things have been done for decades now is the way to go. For others, shroud wrapping and natural or green burials feel right.

Death is painful and messy and a big part of this thing called life but if we learn to talk about it, it can help make the journey of loss or personal preparation less painful and messy.

And funnily enough; once we embrace death and accepted we are all heading down that sacred path, that is when we truly learn to live and embrace life to the fullest. Go figure?
